HIGHWAY 90 CHALLENGE SERIES TO PAVE NEW LANES FOR LOCAL DRIVERS

IRVINGTON, AL — Few corners of the short-track racing world can rival the action along the Gulf Coast.

The area’s local drivers are the lifeblood of the sport and those talented wheelmen strike a chord with the region’s loyal fan base.

With the upcoming season less than a month away, Gulf Coast hotshoes have another reason to eagerly anticipate the first green flag.

Sunny South Raceway in Grand Bay and Mobile International Speedway (MIS) in Irvington — with full cooperation of Pensacola’s Five Flags Speedway and promoter, Tim Bryant — are excited to announce the creation of an inaugural, year-long, dual-track series for both the Sportsmen and Bombers divisions.

In 2016, the Highway 90 Challenge Series will stage seven races at Sunny South, a
¼-mile banked asphalt oval, and six races at the larger, ½-mile MIS.

The two tracks, separated by just 5.6 miles on
U.S. Highway 90, are teaming to host a
13-race points championship, which will present Challenger Series Championship cash awards and trophies to the top-five drivers in each division at season’s end.

MIS technical inspection and tire rules will be in effect at Sunny South. For both divisions at each Sunny South event, an identical purse to MIS will be paid. Points at Sunny South will be calculated using the MIS point system.

Depending on how well this two-division series is received, Sunny South Raceway operator Wayne Okrzesik will consider special events for additional classes.

For 2016, as was the case in recent racing seasons, division sponsors have renewed their partnerships. The Sportsmen will be sponsored by Bob’s Speed Shop (Bob Karcher) while the Bombers will be sponsored by Island Motors II (Sandy Sanford).

Bill Roth, a figurehead in Gulf Coast short-track racing for many years and a former MIS promoter, will oversee the Highway 90 Challenge Series and fulfill announcing duties for the series at both tracks.

Further details and more information will be provided on Opening Night for the Series Friday, March 11, during the NASCAR K&N Pro East weekend at Mobile International Speedway.
