SUNNY SOUTH RACEWAY MINI TRUCKS
Mini Trucks are defined as a compact truck produced prior to 2003 with a 4 cylinder engine.
Examples are; Datsun, Nissan, Toyota, Ford Ranger, Mazda B2000-2500.
Trucks are to be STOCK unless otherwise specified in other rules. RACECEIVERS ARE MANDATORY
BALLAST
All added weight must be in block form, PAINTED WHITE, with the car number on it.
Weight must be securely fastened, with minimum 3/8 inch bolts with washers, inside the body
panels and not on rear or front bumper. NO WEIGHTS IN DRIVERS COMPARTMENT.
BATTERY
Any battery allowed.
Batteries must be mounted in an approved manner within the bed area.
Batteries that are not sealed must be sealed in a marine type box.
Batteries are not allowed in the driver’s compartment.
BINDING COMPONENTS
No leather straps, ropes, chains or wire may be used to hold or bind components together.
BODY
Bumper ends should be plated or strapped to prevent hooking. No cow catchers.
No Protruding objects. Max 8" spoiler no wider than truck bed outside sheetmetal.
Doors to be welded shut, all bracing to be track approved.
All glass, trim, mirrors and all flammable material to be removed from the car.
No open fire walls, holes to be plugged.
Motors to have solid mounts or to be chained down.
Cars must be self-starting with battery enclosed in nonconductive box securely fastened.
Body and bed must be mounted securely to frame.
Limited to gutting the following: hood, roof, dash, inner front fenders and doors.
Truck bed floors shall be fully intact. Any patching of holes or previous cut outs shall be
done with an OEM gage or thicker sheet metal and riveted/welded in place.
No outside iron rails (nerf bars).
Fenders may be cut to give clearance above the tire. Protruding sharp edges will not be allowed.
Hood must be secured on all four comers. Trucks will NOT be allowed to run without hood in place.
Trucks MUST have a minimum of the windshield area in front of the driver to be covered with wire mesh of 1/4” to 1/2” square and must have 3 posts or straps located in front of driver. Post will be built and attached securely. They must be built with ½” tubing or 1/8” x 1” straps. Must have a number on both doors and on roof. Minimum size of number 18” tall 2” wide and contrasting color of truck.
MIRRORS AND RADIOS
No mirrors. No radios or two-way electronic communication devices allowed of any kind.
No sign boards or flashing lights to communicate with driver.
BRAKES
Must have operating brakes at all wheels. Brakes shall be stock. ABS maybe disabled.
No copper or plastic brake lines. No other modifications to the brake system.
BUMPERS
Fabricated bumpers are allowed, must meet safety tech. Stock is preferred.
CANNOT BE OVER BUILT- i.e. Battering ram. No part of bumper may extend beyond center of tire.
Bumpers to remain in approximate stock location. No added bracing of any kind, i.e. Battering ram. No sharp edges. Bumper straps are allowed and highly suggested. (Bumper to body).
DRIVE-LINE
Stock material or steel replacement drive shafts only, must be painted white.
Drive shaft loop (360 degrees) are mandatory. Must be placed 6” minimum to 16” maximum from
the transmission tail shaft.
ENGINE
FOUR CYLINDER ENGINE ONLY.
Stock unaltered with OEM replacement parts unless specified below. Headers are allowed.
Cold air intakes and open air filter elements are allowed. No modifications are allowed to or past
throttle body opening or carburetor. No other modifications are allowed.
A kill switch is to be mounted in the center of the mini truck, clearly labeled “On” - “Off”, and to the
right side of the driver. This switch needs to be easily accessible to Safety Crew.
EXHAUST / MUFFLERS
Stock exhausts manifold or header.
FUEL PUMP
Stock and aftermarket electric fuel pumps are allowed. Electric fuel pumps need to be mounted and
secured to the mini truck or in the fuel cell. GLASS FUEL FILTERS ARE NOT ALLOWED
FUEL
Pump or race gas ONLY. NO ADDITIVES OF ANY KIND! SUBJECT TO INSPECTION AT ANY TIME.
GAS TANK
Fuel tank is to have a full sealing cap. All fuel tanks mounts subject to Tech approval.
RADIATOR
Must be in front of engine, in stock location.
Radiators may be mounted to a front bar with stock mounts removed. Bar may extend to fenders
but must remain behind bumper. Bar must be independent of cage and NO larger than roll bar
material. ANTI-FREEZE IS NOT ALLOWED. WATER WETTER & WATER SUGGESTED.
REAR-END
OEM rear ends only. Differential must be locked or welded gears so both axles/wheels turn together.
ROLL CAGE
Roll bars shall be of the full cage type.
Must be welded and attached securely to frame. Bar may not be secured by welding to floor pan.
Front loops are allowed inside the body in front or behind radiator.
The tech official must approve all roll cages.
SUSPENSION AND STEERING COMPONENTS
Steering system must be stock OEM. Steering quickeners are permitted.
Springs must be STOCK springs and in stock location. Springs may be cut, heated or leafs may be removed to adjust ride height. No changes to shock or spring mounts. No other modifications.
No racing shocks allowed. Manufactures part number must be visible on shock, and the shocks must be the correct shock for that truck.
All mounting points must remain stock.
No Adjustable Components in suspension. No minimum ride heights.
TIRES AND WHEELS
LOPER'S TIRES (5915 Highway 90, Theodore, AL 36582. (251) 459-9533) is the official provider of tires for the SSR Mini Truck Class.
After races, if tires are not marked as bought from LOPER's TIRES, truck will be DQ'd.
1- No racing or performance enhancing wheels allowed.
2- Wheels cannot be modified in any way such as moving wheel centers or having the wheel widened.
3- Wheel spacers allowed 1/4in max.
4-OEM lugs and studs (larger lug nuts optional).
5- No retreads or recaps allowed.
6- No tire shall have a durometer reading softer than 58 points or that tire will be considered illegal.
7-OEM style wheels only. No wheel adapters.
8-Tire must be DOT APPROVED (STREET TIRES) sizes must be within 5 points of each other. Example...235/75/15...to...235/70/15
No doping or softening of tires is allowed.
TRANSMISSION
Stock manual or stock automatic. Trucks must be able to move smoothly and slowly thru pits.
WEIGHT
Minimum weights include driver. 2800 LB weight or 1 LB per CC whichever is greater.
Any mini truck weighing light after the heats or feature will be DQ'd. No burn off.
SEATS
Must have approved racing type seat. Seat must be mounted securely using Fender washers (Tech must approve). Positively No Homemade Aluminum, Plastic or Fiberglass seats allowed.
SAFETY BELT REQUIREMENTS
Seat Belts - Each truck should be equipped with an approved seat belt restraint system.
Belt and attachment are subject to Tech approval.
SAFETY
Driver must wear a full-face helmet, with at least a valid SA 2009 or better Standard Snell label at
all times on the track or when car is fired. Head and Neck brace/pad or restraints are mandatory.
Helmet and face shield must always be worn while operating a mini truck on the racetrack.
Each driver should wear a fire-resistant uniform meeting the SFI specification and display a
valid SFI label. Nomex-type or equivalent fire-resistant uniforms (suit), gloves, neck brace, are mandatory.
Nomex-type or equivalent hood, socks, underwear and shoes are highly suggested.
Driver’s Side window net required and must be equipped with quick release mechanisms.
All steel release system highly suggested.
Misc. Safety Items
1. No sharp or protruding edges in or around the cockpit, which would impede the driver’s rapid
exit from the mini truck. Must meet Tech approval.
2. A marked electrical kill switch in reach of driver.
3. A marked fuel shut off valve in reach of driver.4. Flame retardant seat, roll bar, knee and steering pads or padding are suggested.
4. Driveline u-joint scatter shields are suggested.
FIRE CONTROL
A charged fire extinguisher (maximum of XXX pounds) within the reach of the driver recommended.
On-board system will be inspected and must be passed by tech inspector.
Fire Suppression/Control components not to be used as ballast (Tech to approve mounting/location).
PROTEST ENGINE/TRANSMISSIONS/CHASSIS
A. Participating mini truck owners and drivers ONLY may protest another mini truck’s compliance with
the engine rules. Mini truck must still be running competitively at end of feature. The protest must
be filed with the Technical Inspector with a $600 deposit ($500 protest $100 Tech Time) for a top end inspection which includes all top end items plus the piston rod assembly,
timing chain, camshaft, or converter/clutch. Deposit must be within 10 minutes after the Feature race.
Once the Technical Inspector receives protest money, protest has begun. Money will not be
dispersed until protest inspection of the engine rules and office notified of results. If anything else
regarding the engine is being questioned it must be written down on the original protest, it must
state what is to be inspected.
B. Tear down location shall be agreed upon before leaving Sunny South Raceway. Both parties must
agree and sign protest agreement. Driver/Owner being protested may have first choice of where
tear down will take place, must be in Local area and shop properly equipped. Officials will make
final decision. The protest mini truck must leave for tear down area within 30 minutes or be
declared illegal.
C. Tear downs will be made by the driver, one pitman or mechanic, the Technical Inspector or person
chosen by him to be an observer as an alternate.
D. $100 of Protest money pays for Tech Inspectors time.
If declared legal the $500 is given to the driver protested.
If declared illegal the $500 is returned to the protester, the illegal truck driver will be penalized a two-race suspension and driver’s money and points for the night. Additional fines may be imposed.
